Covenant Church is a body of believers from diverse backgrounds and experiences. Covenant church was founded by Pastor Billy D. Gaston and his wife Erma ‘Lady’ Gaston. The two had been active members of a local congregation serving at various levels, from youth leader to Associate Pastor. Deeply connected to education, the Gaston’s leveraged their degrees in Mathematics, Computer Science, Telecommunication Management and Educational Leadership to mentor, tutor and teach youth and adults of diverse backgrounds in their local congregation and community.
In 2012, Elder Gaston and Lady Gaston received the blessing of their pastor and bishop to plant a church with the purpose of going into the world that others may know a relationship with Jesus Christ, Grow in a relationship with Him and Show forth their relationship with Him. The first worship service was held in January 2013 in an office space on North Lincoln Blvd, Oklahoma City, OK.
Covenant church believes the family is the foundational unit of today’s society. It accepts the charge that the visible Church is commissioned to play a vital role in transforming lives for Christ and establishing stable family relationships. Covenant’s mission (what is done daily) “To develop relationships where Jesus Christ is worshipped, Men are respected, Women are loved, Parents are honored and Children are nurtured” is based on Matthew 28:19-20 and Ephesians 5:22-33; 6:1-5. The vision (what the future will look like as a result of the mission) of Covenant Church is “Empowered people, United families, Strong marriages and Healthy communities: TRANSFORMED Lives”. This happens through the Spirit-filled preaching and teaching of the Word of God and the unconditional love of others in daily living.
In July 2017, Pastor Gaston located an old church building that needed much work. The area was one of high crime, prostitution, poverty, homelessness, broken families, drug addiction, and food insecurity. The church family, believing this was the place God was calling them to, agreed to move forward. They took on the new building and community with the hopes of expanding their ministry reach in a new community. They worked tirelessly for months removing debris, laying tile, painting, tearing down walls, building walls, and much more. Though the work continued, the church believed it was time to begin worshipping in the new facility. In November 2017, Covenant Church left the office space to begin worship in their new church building and service in a new area. In April 2019, through the Lord’s blessing of stewardship, the congregation paid off all debt on the building purchase and renovations.
Today, Covenant church is a light shining bright within the Oklahoma City community. With lovingkindness as its foundation, Covenant is able to build a bridge of hope to all people groups and then walk across to introduce them to Jesus. Covenant continues to partner with churches and major organizations across the state of Oklahoma to meet the spiritual and physical needs of the diverse population it serves. As a growing church, Covenant looks forward to expanding its existing ministries and its influence to transform more lives for the cause of Jesus Christ.
